Neither side has won a Nations League game, and between them they have gone 10 matches without scoring. North Macedonia are bottom of League B Group 1, a point below Scotland, and this already has the look of a relegation scrap.

Switzerland won 3-0 at Hampden on Tuesday, though Scotland played most of it with 10 men after Jack Hendry was sent off inside 11 minutes. That was a fourth game in a row without a goal, a run that takes in blanks against Brazil and Morocco at the World Cup.

Pocognoli’s two games in charge have brought a goalless draw in Slovenia and that defeat.

Lose here and he becomes only the fourth Scotland manager to go winless through his first three matches. There is time to fix it, with Slovenia to come in Glasgow and two further games in November.

The away record offers some comfort. Scotland have lost one of their last seven on the road across all competitions, keeping five clean sheets, and they are unbeaten in three against North Macedonia since losing the first meeting back in September 2008.

Hendry is suspended, so Pocognoli must change the side. Billy Gilmour could come in alongside Lewis Ferguson with Scott McTominay absent, and Kieron Bowie is in line to start up front after being sacrificed for the red card, though Robbie Ure is also pushing to partner Oli McBurnie.

Andy Robertson is set to win his 100th cap and captain the side, closing on Kenny Dalglish’s record of 102. John McGinn moved up to joint-third on the list with his 91st on Tuesday.

North Macedonia have their own problems. Six games without a goal is a new national record, and Goce Sedloski has taken no wins and no goals from his five matches since replacing a manager he once played 100 times under the same badge for.

They were beaten 3-0 at home by Switzerland and 2-0 in Slovenia, but this is usually a hard ground to visit, with no back-to-back home defeats since 2019. Boban Nikolov and Ezgjan Alioski have both pulled out, Alioski with a calf injury, while captain Enis Bardhi is due an 84th cap.
