Klopp’s start has been a 1-1 draw in the Netherlands, undone by a late equaliser, and then a 1-0 home defeat to Greece settled by Dimitris Kourbelis on 74 minutes. Germany are winless in four and have not kept a clean sheet in seven.

Tipped to win League A Group 2, they sit third and on course for a relegation playoff instead. Three points behind the Netherlands and five behind Greece, with those two meeting each other, Germany cannot afford another slip.

Klopp has named two separate squads totalling 44 players for this international break, so Thursday hands the second group a chance to make a case for themselves.

Kai Havertz has withdrawn after picking up an injury in the opener, though he was unlikely to play here anyway. Malick Thiaw and Waldemar Anton are in line to start at centre-back, with David Raum and Ridle Baku at full-back and Tom Bischof pushing for a senior appearance.

Serbia are bottom of the group and in worse shape still.

Sunday’s 2-1 defeat to the Netherlands was Veljko Paunovic’s sixth loss in eight games and took Serbia to four straight defeats for the first time in more than 20 years. He replaced Dragan Stojkovic last October and is approaching his 10th match in charge.

Both Nations League defeats have been by a single goal, which flatters them rather than otherwise. Serbia have allowed eight big chances across the two games, and they have conceded first in eight of their last 10 matches and trailed at half time in seven of the last eight.

Dusan Tadic won his 113th cap on Sunday, extending his national record and moving seven clear of Aleksandar Mitrovic. With Mitrovic out of the squad, the goals are largely down to Luka Jovic, who scored against the Netherlands and also found the net the last time these two met.

That head to head is tighter than the current form suggests, with the last three meetings producing a win apiece and a draw.
