Sunday teatime brings the pick of the opening weekend, with Matthias Jaissle and Andoni Iraola both taking charge of their first competitive matches on Tyneside.
Newcastle have been through another summer of upheaval. Eddie Howe has gone, and so have Sandro Tonali, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon, following a season that ended with the Magpies 12th in the table.
Jaissle arrives at 38 with six trophies already behind him from spells at Red Bull Salzburg and Al-Ahli. Pre-season brought a win over Valencia, defeats to Everton and Bayer Leverkusen and a draw with Strasbourg.
Joelinton is out for a couple of weeks with a groin injury and Tino Livramento is still working back from the calf problem that cost him a place in the England World Cup squad. Summer arrivals Sean Steur, Aladji Bamba, Amar Dedic and goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek are all in line for debuts.
Liverpool come into the season under Iraola, appointed as Arne Slot’s successor after the Reds finished fifth last term.
Their pre-season produced 20 goals across six matches and finished with back to back clean sheets against Como, a useful sign after nine were conceded in the opening four friendlies.
Conor Bradley, Giovanni Leoni and Hugo Ekitike remain in recovery, with Joe Gomez also sidelined after picking up a muscular problem during the summer. Curtis Jones is on the verge of a move to Inter Milan and Alexis Mac Allister has only just returned from the World Cup.
Newcastle have avoided defeat in each of their last four opening day fixtures, and Jaissle has won his first game in charge at all three of his previous clubs. Iraola, meanwhile, has never lost to Newcastle in the top flight, taking three wins and three draws.
The Reds also arrive on a 13-game unbeaten run in matchday one fixtures, and it is almost a year to the day since they won an extraordinary five-goal thriller at St James’ Park.
