Two of European football’s heavyweights go head to head in Los Angeles tonight, with Spain and Belgium both chasing a place in the World Cup semi-finals against France or Morocco.

Spain continue to make history at this tournament. A 1-0 win over Portugal in the last 16 courtesy of Mikel Merino’s late header gave La Roja a sixth consecutive knockout match without conceding.

That run now stretches across more than ten hours of World Cup football and represents the most impressive defensive record in the history of the competition.

Luis de la Fuente is likely to name the same side that edged out Portugal, with Lamine Yamal, Dani Olmo and Mikel Oyarzabal continuing in attack alongside Pedri and Rodri in midfield.

Nico Williams is still not fully fit after suffering a muscle injury against Uruguay in the group stage, so Alex Baena should continue on the left. Marcos Llorente, Fabian Ruiz and Merino are all pushing for starts after their contributions from the bench.

Belgium arrive as the surprise package of the tournament. Few predicted they would still be involved at the quarter-final stage, but Rudi Garcia’s side have been anything but easy to watch in the best possible way.

A 4-1 hammering of the USA was followed by a last-gasp Youri Tielemans penalty in the dying seconds against the co-hosts to send Belgium through in arguably the most dramatic moment of the tournament so far.

The biggest blow for Belgium is the loss of Amadou Onana, who ruptured his ACL against the USA and is out for the rest of the year. His absence leaves a significant hole in midfield, with Hans Vanaken and Nicolas Raskin likely to start.

Kevin De Bruyne and Jeremy Doku are both expected to return to the lineup tonight after Garcia rested them against the USA, while Charles De Ketelaere continues as the false nine with Romelu Lukaku again available from the bench.

Belgium are unbeaten in 18 matches and have scored in every game at this tournament at an average of more than 2.5 goals per game. That kind of cutting edge will test even Spain’s remarkable defensive record.

There is an interesting subplot running through the tie. Thibaut Courtois is Spain’s goalkeeper and the man Belgium are trying to score past tonight, a situation that will not be lost on the Belgian fans in the SoFi Stadium stands.

Spain have won nine of the last 11 meetings between the sides, though the most recent encounter was almost a decade ago. Belgium did beat Spain 1-0 at the 1986 World Cup quarter-finals, the only time they have met at this stage, and they will draw on that for motivation tonight.

France await the winners in the semi-final on 14 or 15 July.
