Littler has been the standout performer throughout the tournament and arrives in the last four as a strong 4/7 favourite.

The defending champion has averaged under 100 in just one match so far, a second round meeting with David Davies, and has otherwise looked in complete control of his campaign. His fourth round clash with Rob Cross proved his sternest test, with Littler dropping two sets, yet he still progressed without ever appearing in real danger.

That match also revealed a more fiery side to the world number one, as he reacted to a hostile crowd, though it seemed to sharpen rather than hinder his performance. Since then, Littler has powered through the competition, including a dominant quarter final win over Krzysztof Ratajski, reinforcing his status as the man to beat.

Standing in his way is Ryan Searle, who has enjoyed the tournament of his career. Searle may not have been widely tipped to reach the semi finals, but he has taken full advantage of his route through the draw and produced a series of composed, high quality performances.

Searle had dropped just two sets prior to the quarter finals, both coming in his victory over Jonny Clayton.

While his average dipped slightly in that match, his finishing proved decisive, and his ability to seize key moments under pressure underlined just how dangerous he can be when given opportunities.

The quarter final also showed Searle’s ability to start quickly, something he will likely need to repeat if he is to trouble Littler. Building an early lead may be crucial, as Littler has consistently grown stronger as matches progress throughout the tournament.

Despite Littler being priced as a heavy favourite, Searle’s form suggests this semi final could be more competitive than the odds imply. He has recorded multiple ton plus averages during the championship and has been ruthless on the doubles when chances arise.

While Littler is still expected to find a way through and book his place in another World Championship final, Searle’s consistency and confidence mean he is unlikely to go quietly.

If he can reproduce the level he has shown so far, the opening semi final has the potential to deliver a far closer contest than many anticipate.
