Universal Channel has acquired the UK rights to the American version of Prime Suspect, the US remake of the classic British crime drama.
The original ITV series made its name with Helen Mirren as DCI Jane Tennison, battling both murderers and the sexism of her own force. This reworking, developed by Alexandra Cunningham, transplants that idea to New York and stars Maria Bello as Detective Jane Timoney, a tough, single-minded homicide cop who has to earn her place in a squad room full of hostile male colleagues.
As Timoney works a run of murder cases, the show keeps the original’s focus on a talented woman fighting to be taken seriously in a man’s world. Universal Channel is bringing the series to UK viewers as part of its drama line-up.
