NBC has renewed Aquarius for a second season. The period crime drama stars David Duchovny as Sam Hodiak, a Los Angeles police sergeant in the late 1960s whose work draws him into the orbit of a then-unknown Charles Manson.
Created by John McNamara and set in 1967, the series mixes real history with fiction as Hodiak and his young undercover partner Brian Shafe investigate cases across a city simmering with social change. Gethin Anthony plays the young, manipulative Manson as he gathers the followers who would become his Family.
The first season was the subject of a distribution experiment, with NBC releasing all of its episodes online immediately after the broadcast premiere. Traditional ratings were modest, but the show drew a strong digital audience, and production on the second season is due to begin later this year.
