5USA, Channel 5’s sister channel, has acquired the UK rights to The Mysteries of Laura, NBC’s crime comedy-drama starring Debra Messing.
Based on the Spanish series Los Misterios de Laura and developed by Jeff Rake, the show casts Messing as Detective Laura Diamond, a sharp NYPD homicide detective who is also a frazzled single mother to a pair of unruly twin boys. Each episode balances a murder investigation with the daily chaos of her home life, with Josh Lucas as her estranged husband Jake, who also happens to be her boss at the precinct.
The result is a lighter spin on the standard cop show, leaning on Messing’s comic timing as much as on the cases themselves. 5USA plans to bring the series to UK screens in early 2015.
