Ben Miller is leaving Death in Paradise after two series, with Kris Marshall lined up to take over as the BBC One drama’s new lead detective.

Created by Robert Thorogood, the show is set on the fictional Caribbean island of Saint Marie and made its name on the contrast between sun-soaked surroundings and a very English detective. Miller played DI Richard Poole, a buttoned-up Londoner who never quite took to the heat, sand or laid-back island pace as he solved a murder a week.

Marshall joins as his replacement, DI Humphrey Goodman, a likeable but accident-prone Englishman who arrives to head up the team. He inherits the existing squad, including Sara Martins as DS Camille Bordey and Danny John-Jules as Officer Dwayne Myers, with Miller’s departure set to play out on screen.
