Fox is closing in on a revival of The X-Files, with the network lining up a short-order return that would reunite Gillian Anderson and David Duchovny.

The two would once again play FBI agents Dana Scully and Fox Mulder, the pair whose investigations into the paranormal and government cover-ups anchored the original series. The X-Files ran on Fox from 1993 to 2002 across nine seasons and spawned two feature films, building a devoted following.

Series creator Chris Carter is expected back to oversee the new run as showrunner. The revival is understood to be a limited event rather than a full season, with a run of around half a dozen episodes under discussion, an approach Fox has used before with 24: Live Another Day.

A short order would make it easier to bring the original stars and creative team back together, while leaving the door open to more should the return prove popular.
