Anton Yelchin, best known for his role as Pavel Chekov in JJ Abrams series of rebooted Star Trek feature films, died on Sunday June 19th. He was 27. He is survived by his parents Irina & Victor Yelchin.

And the official title for the next Star Trek feature film is.... Star Trek Beyond. Helmer Justin Lin revealed the news on Twitter, confirming reports that had been circulating since April (beginning with TrekMovie) that Beyond would be the title for the new film, which just entered production in Vancouver. Beyond is scheduled for release in thaters on July 8th 2016, marking the 50th anniversary of the Star Trek franchise.

Kirk and Spock are staying put on the bridge of Enterprise. Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto, who have been playing the two characters since JJ Abrams rebooted the Star Trek film series in 2009, have signed new deals with Paramount Pictures and Skydance Productions which call for them to play the iconic characters in a potential fourth Trek film (should it get a greenlight from the studio).

Luther and The Wire star Idris Elba is reportedly being eyed to take on a key role in the third feature film in the rebooted Star Trek series. While Elba is expected to play the villain, precise details of the role are being kept under though the Klingons are said to be the primary antagonists in the new movie.

Justin Lin, who is well known for helming the Fast & Furious franchise and is coming off of directing the opening episodes of True Detective season 2, has been tapped to direct Star Trek 3. He replaces Roberto Orci, who stepped down as director of the film earlier this month.

Roberto Orci, who scripted (along with Alex Kurtzman) both the 2009 Star Trek reboot and last year’s sequel Into Darkness, will no longer be directing the upcoming third Star Trek feature film. Top of the short-list to replace Orci as director is Edgar Wright, best known for helming 'Shaun of the Dead' and 'Hot Fuzz'.
