Channel 4 Orders 1980s Crime Comedy ‘The Curse’
Channel 4 has ordered The Curse, a crime themed comedy series that is loosely based on the infamous Brink-Mat robbery of the 1980s. This marks the second project inspired by the robbery, with the commission coming mere days after the BBC revealed they had ordered drama series The Gold.
Gold is expanding the Drapers Tours franchise. After previously commissioning three murder mystery comedies (Murder On The Blackpool Express, Death On The Tyne, and Dial M For Middlesbrough), the UKTV owned and operated channel has ordered a three-part follow up series, titled Murder They Hope.
BBC One has handed out a second season renewal to their Tom Davis fronted series King Gary. Six episodes have been ordered for the show's second season. The renewal comes shortly after the first season wrapped its run and on the back of strong figures on iPlayer. The BBC said it had attracted over 2 million views on the streaming service.
After piloting the project as part of their Comedy Playhouse strand this past December, BBC One has picked up King Gary to series with a six episode order. Production on the first season gets underway this weekend ahead of a 2020 premiere.
UKTV is expanding their slate of originals. The commercial broadcaster has commissioned a new scripted comedy starring Jon Richardson for Dave, Death On The Tyne sequel Dial M For Middlesbrough for Gold, and a new eight episode Dave Gorman series for Dave.
