Wealth Of LGBT Scripted Shows, Dearth Of UK Pick Ups

With a recent trend to more diverse scripted shows, a number of LGBT-centric shows have recently been commissioned. But despite these varied stories, offering a complex view of LGBT life, not a single one of these shows have secured a UK deal. So just why have these scripted dramas and comedies, which prominently feature LGBT characters, failed to cross the Atlantic?

Orange Is The New Black is coming to UK television. Sony Channel, the flagship entertainment channel operated by Sony Pictures Television Networks here in the UK, has secured the linear rights to the award winning Netflix original series after striking a multi-year deal with series producer and international distributor Lionsgate Television, TVWise has learned.

Comedy Central UK is adding two original series from their U.S. sister network to their line-up. The Viacom backed broadcaster has picked up the exclusive UK rights to TripTank spin-off Jeff & Some Aliens and live-action comedy series Detroiters, TVWise has learned. Both Detroiters and Jeff & Some Aliens are set to premiere on Comedy Central UK early next month.

PBS first original scripted series in more than a decade is crossing the Atlantic. UKTV's Drama channel has secured the exclusive UK rights to Mercy Street, the U.S. public broadcaster's scripted drama series from Ridley Scott which is set during the American Civil War, after striking a deal with the distribution division of Dean Devlin's Electric Entertainment, TVWise has confirmed. The show's six episode first season is set to premiere on Drama in May.

Netflix UK Acquires Freeform’s London Set Murder Mystery Series ‘Guilt’

Netflix UK has secured the exclusive UK rights to Guilt, Freeform's short-lived ten episode murder mystery drama series that was set and shot in London and was said to be based on the Amanda Knox murder case, TVWise has confirmed. The series will premiere on Wednesday March 22nd, when the complete series will be available to stream for Netflix UK subscribers.
