Channel 5’s VOD service My5 has ordered Neighbours: Erinsborough High, a spin-off of their long-running Australian acquisition Neighbours. Five episodes have been commissioned for the show’s first season, which will be stripped across a single week in November.
Neighbours: Erinsborough High explores what goes on behind the school gates of Erinsborough High during exam period, with the disappearance of one of the Year Twelve students sparking a number of revelations. The show’s storyline will run in parallel to the main series on Channel 5 and will feature crossover as well as new characters.
The series is part of Channel 5’s strategy to take My5 from a simple catch up service to a destination VOD player with exclusive titles. “Neighbours continues to be a popular show which has brought enjoyment to audiences for many years, so it’s hugely exciting to bring its first ever spin-off series to fans in the UK exclusively on My5”, said Oli Thomas, Vice-President, Digital Lead, Channel 5.
The parent series remains a strong performer for Channel 5. Neighbours achieved its best performance ever for 16-54s in July 2019 with a 19% share of audience – whilst on My5, streams are up +17% YOY. Channel 5 closed the gap between the Australian and UK broadcasts back in 2015; initially shortening the window from 18 months down to two-weeks and eventually to a mere 24 hours.
