My5 Acquires Royal Family Drama ‘The Royals’

The Royals has landed a third UK home. Channel 5’s VOD service My5 has acquired E!’s royal family drama series starring Elizabeth Hurley after striking a deal with international distributor Lionsgate Worldwide Television Distribution Group. The show’s first two seasons will be available on My5 from next month.

Set and shot in London, The Royals follows the exploits of a fictional Royal Family. The drama series pits public perception of the royal family against the reality of life inside the castle walls, from the lavish parties and high stakes political summits, to the private family gatherings and secret romances.

However being born into this elite circle comes at a cost and the Royals’ lives are played out on a world stage where press is 24/7 and social media drives an insatiable appetite to follow their every move. The drama series, which was created by One Tree Hill‘s Mark Schwahn, is produced by Lionsgate Television and Universal Cable Productions, The Royals stars Elizabeth Hurley, Vincent Regan, William Moseley, Alexandra Park, Tom Austen, Jake Maskall, Ukweli Roach and Oliver Milburn. Joan Collins guest stars as the Grand Duchess of Oxford. E! cancelled The Royals after four seasons.

The Royals initially aired on this side of the pond on E! UK, who aired the first two seasons between 2015 and 2016 before opting not to pick up the rights to the show’s third season in late 2016. The Royals remained without a UK broadcaster until 2018 when StarzPlay picked up all four seasons ahead of their UK launch. At My5, The Royals joins a growing slate of third party acquisitions that includes such shows as The OathBellevuePulse and Bad Mothers. The VOD service also recently moved into commissioning scripted originals with Neighbours: Erinsborough High, a spin-off of their long-running Australian acquisition Neighbours.
