StarzPlay – the Starz branded streaming service that is available in the UK via Amazon Prime Video Channels, Virgin Media and Apple TV – has picked up the UK rights to Starz’s recently ordered Dangerous Liaisons adaptation.
Based on the novel of the same name, Dangerous Liaisons tells the origin story of the early years of the iconic characters Merteuil and Valmont when they meet as passionate young lovers in the slums of 18th century Paris.
Per Starz, this is an adaptation for a 21st century audience told from the perspective of Merteuil, informed by her line from the novel: “Born to avenge my sex and conquer yours, I have succeeded in inventing strategies for doing so that before me had never been conceived.” This story of seduction and betrayal follows the dangerous liaisons of the rich and powerful in the court of Louis VXI, as they wreak havoc on society, and each other along the way.
Call The Midwife scribe Harriet Warner re-imagined the series and is the writer. Coline Abert, James Dormer and Rita Kalnejais will also write for the series. The drama series is being produced by Playground and Flame Ventures in association with Lionsgate Television. The executive producers are Playground’s Colin Callender, Tony Krantz, Bethan Jones, Scott Huff and Christopher Hampton.
In addition to the UK, StarzPlay has also taken rights to the new Dangerous Liaisons in Germany, France and Spain. This marks the latest acquisition for StarzPlay UK after they recently inked a deal with Warner Bros. International Television Distribution for Batman prequel series Pennyworth. They are also the exclusive UK home to such shows as The Spanish Princess, Vida, Sweetbitter, Castle Rock, Harlots, The Act, and Mr. Mercedes.
