UKTV’s Gold channel has given the green-light to Trust Morecambe & Wise, a four episode retrospective series presented by Sir Lenny Henry.
Trust Morecambe & Wise will take a look at rarely seen footage featuring the immortal duo at the peak of their careers. It will be filmed in front of a live studio audience and include contributions from comic guests and some of the duo’s much-loved co-stars.
The series, which is set to air later this year, is being produced by Mercury Productions. “It’s a thrill to bring Gold viewers the brilliance of Morecambe & Wise – and to have Lenny Henry fronting the series”, said Mercury Productions’ Tom Webber. “Lenny’s not just a huge fan of Eric and Ernie, he knew them both and is the perfect host to lead this celebration of their genius.”
“If you’ve been at a cross roads in your life or simply trying to work out which sofa cushions to get, Trust Morecambe & Wise is what we’ve been waiting for”, added UKTV Commissioning Editor Joe McVey. “Every decision you make could be made easier by allowing Eric & Ernie to guide you. Also, it really is a great thrill to claim that I have commissioned Morecambe & Wise at some point in my career and that’s certainly the way I’m going to spin it on my CV.”
Trust Morecambe & Wise is the latest in a string of recent commissions for Gold. The UKTV owned and operated channel has also recently ordered Dial M For Middlesbrough, a sequel to both Murder On The Blackpool Express and Death On The Tyne; and The Cockfields, a three episode sitcom from David Earl & Joe Wilkinson. Kim Cattrall (Sex & The City) recently exited The Cockfields due to scheduling conflicts, with Sarah Parish (Trollied, Bancroft) now assuming the role.
