Deadly Class is crossing the pond. StarzPlay – the streaming service owned by US premium cable network Starz that is available via Amazon Prime Video Channels, Virgin Media and Apple TV – has acquired the UK rights to the series in a deal with international distributor Sony Pictures Television. The series will premiere on Friday July 19th.
Set in a dark, heightened world against the backdrop of late ‘80s counterculture, Deadly Class tells the story of Marcus, a teen living on the streets who is recruited into Kings Dominion, an elite private academy where the world’s top crime families send their next generations. Maintaining his moral code while surviving a ruthless curriculum, vicious social cliques and his own adolescent uncertainties soon proves to be vital.
The drama series, which was recently cancelled by Syfy after a single season, is based on the best-selling 2014 Image Comics graphic novel by Rick Remender and Wes Craig. It is produced by Sony Pictures Television and Universal Cable Productions and stars Benjamin Wadsworth, Benedict Wong, Lana Condor, María Gabriela de Faría, Luke Tennie, Liam James and Michel Duval. The executive producers are Rick Remender, Miles Orion Feldsott, Joe Russo, Anthony Russo, Mike Larocca and Mick Betancourt.
Since their launch in the UK last year, StarzPlay has quickly established themselves as an aggressive buyer of first run U.S. content. In addition to their pipeline of Lionsgate distributed Starz originals – including The Spanish Princess, Sweetbitter and Vida – the streamer has struck third party deals with Sony Pictures Television, Warner Bros. International Television Distribution, NBCUniversal International Distribution and ITV Studios Global Entertainment for such shows as Mr. Mercedes, Counterpart, Castle Rock, The Act, Harlots and Rig 45.
