Sky One is bringing a new take on Cinderella to the small screen this Christmas. The satcaster has ordered Cinderella: After Ever After, which explores what happened after the fairy tale ended. The special is eyed as a key part of Sky One’s Christmas schedule.
“It’s a fairy tale script and a fairy tale cast”, said Sky’s Head of Comedy Jon Mountague, who commissioned the special alongside Sky UK & Ireland Director of Programmes Zai Bennett. “Christmas with a twist from the incomparable David Walliams’
Cinderella: After Ever After begins where the fairy tale ends; Cinderella has just married her Prince Charming, but soon has a rude awakening when she realises married life isn’t all it’s cracked up to be when you have an image-obsessed, floss-dancing, hip-hop rapping husband. Perhaps a glass slipper fitting your foot is not sufficient grounds for a lifelong commitment after all?
The special follows Cinderella as she fights to save The King from the traps of her evil stepmother Madame Blackheart and her conspiring and moronic stepsisters Dumbella and Rubella. The cast lined up for the special includes David Walliams (The Midnight Gang) as Prince Charming, Sian Gibson (Death On The Tyne) as Cinderella, Sir Tom Courtenay (Unforgotten) as The King, and Celia Imrie (Hang Ups) as Madame Blackheart.
Cinderella: After Ever After was penned by The Dawson Brothers and is being produced by King Bert Productions – the indie set up by Walliams and Miranda Hart. This marks the latest festive collaboration between the indie and Sky, following on from The Queen & I and Ratburger. Production on Cinderella: After Ever After is now underway. The executive producers are Tilusha Ghelani and Jo Sargent. Sky Vision is co-funding and will distribute internationally.
“When you read a story to a child and it ends ‘they lived happily ever after’ the child often asks what happened next? Now, for the first time in history, we will reveal what happened next for Cinderella, Prince Charming and the Wicked Stepmother”, Walliams added. “What happened, ‘After Ever After’? We have assembled a magnificent cast and crew for this one-off family comedy film. It promises to be a real treat for TV viewers this Christmas. I want to say a huge thank you to Sky for making it possible”.
