StarzPlay Acquires UK Rights To Hulu’s ‘The Act’, Sets June Premiere

StarzPlay – the Starz owned streaming service that is now available on both Amazon Prime Video Channels and Virgin Media – has picked up the UK rights to Hulu’s true-crime anthology drama The Act after striking a deal with NBCUniversal International Distribution. The series will premiere on Friday June 14th.

The Act is an anthology series telling a new true-crime story each season. The first season follows Gypsy Blanchard, a girl trying to escape the toxic relationship she has with her overprotective mother. Her quest for independence opens a Pandora’s box of secrets, one that ultimately leads to murder.

The drama series, which was created by Nick Antosca and Michelle Dean, is produced by Universal Content Productions and stars Patricia Arquette, Joey King, Chloë Sevigny and AnnaSophia Robb. It is based on the 2016 BuzzFeed article “Dee Dee Wanted Her Daughter To Be Sick, Gypsy Wanted Her Mom Murdered” by Michelle Dean. Nick Antosca, Michelle Dean, Greg Shephard and Britton Rizzio serve as executive producers.

The Act joins a slate of exclusive acquisitions at StarzPlay that also includes Hulu’s Harlots and Castle Rock; AT&T’s Audience network’s Stephen King adaptation Mr. Mercedes; Starz originals Counterpart, Sweetbitter, Vida, Now Apocalypse and The Spanish Princess; and Nordic thriller Rig 45. They are also expected to be the UK home to Lionsgate distributed Starz original series moving forward.
