The Chicago franchise is losing two original cast members. Colin Donnell is exiting Chicago Med, while Jon Seda is exiting Chicago PD. Both are departing due to creative reasons related to the arcs of their characters. Despite the exits as regulars, guest appearances down the road remain a possibility.
Colin Donnell has been a core member of the Chicago Med cast since the series debuted in 2015, playing the role of cardio-thoracic surgeon Doctor Connor Rhodes. He did not make an appearance in the Chicago Fire season three episode that served as a backdoor pilot, but has appeared in a handful of crossovers with both Fire and PD since.
Seda first played Detective Antonio Dawson as a recurring role on the first season of Chicago Fire, before becoming a regular on Chicago PD. This marks the second PD exit for Seda, who originally departed the main cast to help head up short-lived spin-off Chicago Justice. After Justice was cancelled he returned to the main cast of PD. The news of the exits was first reported by Deadline.
In addition to Donnell and Seda, Norma Kuhling, who plays South African trauma surgeon Ava Bekker, is also leaving Chicago Med at the end of the current season. While Donnell marks the first major exit from Chicago Med since it went to series (Laurie Holden, who appeared in the backdoor pilot, exited before the series started airing), Seda follows original stars Archie Kao, Sophia Bush and Elias Koteas in exiting Chicago PD.
NBC has already handed out renewals for the 2019-2020 season for Chicago Fire, Chicago Med and Chicago PD. On this side of the pond the shows air on three different channels: Chicago Fire on Sky Witness, Chicago Med on Universal TV, and Chicago PD on 5USA.
