The White Princess follow up The Spanish Princess has found a UK home. StarzPlay – the streaming service that is now available on both Amazon Prime Video Channels and Virgin Media – has secured the UK rights to the limited series starring Charlotte Hope (Game Of Thrones).
The Spanish Princess will premiere on StarzPlay on Sunday May 5th, when the first episode will be available to stream. New episodes will then continue to made available every Sunday – the same day that they air on Starz state-side. StarzPlay marks the third first run UK home for an entry in the franchise. The first entry, The White Queen, was a co-production with the BBC and aired on flagship channel BBC One. The second entry, The Spanish Princess, was ordered by Starz after the BBC opted not to move forward with the franchise and was ultimately acquired by UKTV’s Drama channel.
The Spanish Princess tells the story of Catherine of Aragon, the teenaged princess of Spain who was promised the English throne since she was a child. She arrives in a grey, rain-lashed England with her glorious and diverse court including her lady-in-waiting Lina – an African Moor. She is Princess of Wales now, but when her husband Prince Arthur dies suddenly, the throne seems lost to Catherine. Until she claims her marriage was never consummated and that as a virgin she may set her sights on the new heir, the charismatic and headstrong Prince Harry who will one day rule as King Henry VIII.
The limited series, which was penned by franchise creator Emma Frost and is based on Philippa Gregory’s novels The Constant Princess and The King’s Curse, is produced by by Playground and All3 Media’s New Pictures and stars Charlotte Hope, Stephanie Levi-John, Nadia Parkes, Aaron Cobham, Dame Harriet Walter, Laura Carmichael, Ruairi O’Connor, Elliot Cowan, Alan McKenna, Angus Imrie, Alexandra Moen and Georgie Henley. Frost and Matthew Graham serve as showrunners. They also executive produce alongside Colin Callender and Scott Huff for Playground and Charlie Pattinson and Charlie Hampton for New Pictures.
StarzPlay has been building an impressive slate of first run acquisitions since they launched in the UK last year. The streaming service is the UK home to such shows as: Hulu’s Harlots and Castle Rock; AT&T’s Audience network’s Stephen King adaptation Mr. Mercedes; Starz originals Counterpart, Sweetbitter, Vida, and the upcoming comedy Now Apocalypse; and Nordic thriller Rig 45. They are also expected to be the UK home to Lionsgate distributed Starz original series moving forward.
