ITV has set the cast for Sanditon. Rose Williams (Curfew, Changeland), Theo James (The Divergent Series, Downton Abbey), Anne Reid (Last Tango in Halifax, Hold the Sunset) and Kris Marshall (Death in Paradise, Love Actually) have all been cast in the eight episode adaptation of Jane Austen’s unfinished novel that was written only months before her death in 1817.
Sandition tells the story of the joyously impulsive, spirited and unconventional Charlotte Heywood and her spiky relationship with the humorous, charming Sidney Parker. When a chance accident transports her from her rural hometown of Willingden to the would-be coastal resort of the eponymous title, it exposes Charlotte to the intrigues and dalliances of a seaside town on the make, and the characters whose fortunes depend on its commercial success. The twists and turns of the plot, which takes viewers from the West Indies to the rotting alleys of London, exposes the hidden agendas of each character and sees Charlotte discover herself and ultimately find love.
Rose Williams has been cast as Charlotte Heywood, Theo James as Sidney Parker, Anne Reid as Lady Denham, and Kris Marshall as Tom Parker. Rounding out the cast is Kate Ashfield (Line Of Duty), Jack Fox (Johnny English Strikes Again), Charlotte Spencer (The Living And The Dead), Lily Sacofsky (Bancroft), Crystal Clarke (Ordeal By Innocence), Elizabeth Berrington (Patrick Melrose), Adrian Rawlins (Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows), Turlough Convery (Les Miserables), Mark Stanley (Game Of Thrones), Matthew Needham (The Hollow Crown), Alexandra Roach (Black Mirror), Leo Suter (Victoria), Kevin Eldon (Cavendish) and Adrian Scarborough (A Very English Scandal).
War & Peace scribe Andrew Davies has penned the adaptation; turning the eleven chapter fragment Austin penned in the 19th century into an eight episode period drama. Red Planet Pictures are producing the series, which was commissioned by ITV’s Head of Drama Poly Hill. PBS Masterpiece are co-producing and will air Sanditon in the United States. The executive producers are Belinda Campbell for Red Planet Pictures and Rebecca Eaton for PBS Masterpiece. Georgina Lowe is the series producer, while Olly Blackburn is the director. BBC Studios is handling global sales. Production is now underway in Bristol at The Bottle Yard Studios.
“I’m very excited that we are bringing the world of Sanditon to the TV audience with such a brilliant ensemble cast, headed by star of the future Rose Williams as our heroine, independent and forthright Charlotte Heywood, together with Theo James (Divergent) as Sidney Parker, our Regency entrepreneur with an aura of danger”, said series creator Andrew Davies. “It’s been such fun to develop Jane Austen’s fragment into a series – now I’m eager to see our exceptional cast bring Sanditon to life.”
