Universal TV is adding another Canadian drama to their schedule. The NBCU owned and operated channel has acquired the UK rights conspiracy thriller Departure, starring Archie Panjabi (The Good Wife). The six episode series is set to air on Universal TV later this year.
Departure follows the mystery of Flight 716 – a passenger plane that vanishes over the Atlantic Ocean. Following the mysterious crash, recently widowed, brilliant aviation investigator Kendra Malley (Panjabi) is called in to investigate by her former boss and mentor Howard Lawson. With the whole world watching, Kendra and her team race to pinpoint the missing aircraft and locate possible survivors.
They must battle through a host of suspects and motives, from pilot suicide and terrorism, to politically motivated murder and systems failure to determine what really happened to Flight 716 – and to stop it from happening again. The drama series, which was created by Vincent Shiao, is produced by Shaftesbury and Greenpoint Productions, in association with Corus Entertainment and Red Arrow Studios International, and co-financed by Starlings Television and stars Archie Panjabi, Christopher Plummer, Kris Holden-Ried, Claire Forlani, Rebecca Liddiard, Shazad Latif, Tamara Duarte, Peter Mensah, Kristian Bruun, Allan Hawco, Dougray Scott, Sasha Roiz, Mark Rendall, Dmitry Chepovetsky and Paris Jefferson.
The acquisition stems from a larger deal inked by Universal TV’s parent company NBCUniversal International Networks that will see Departure air on their Universal branded channels in in the UK, Africa and Germany and on their 13th Street branded channels in France, Spain and Poland following the Canadian premiere on Corus Entertainment’s network Global Television. “Departure’s gripping storyline – steeped in conspiracy, mystery and intriguing characters – is a great fit for our international channel brands and will have our viewers on the edge of their seats”, said Steve Patscheck, Executive Vice-President of Global Programming for NBCUniversal International Networks. “We look forward to bringing this thrilling series and its stellar award-winning cast to our fans around the world.”
Departure is the latest Canadian series the find a home on Universal TV. NBCU’s flagship UK channel is also home to CBC’s M.R. Hall adaptation Coroner and legal drama Burden Of Truth, and fellow Global original series Ransom and Private Eyes.
