DRG has secured the international distribution rights to The White Wall, an eight episode Scandinavian sci-fi drama that is being produced for SVT in Sweden and YLE in Finland. DRG will launch the series to international buyers at NATPE.
The White Wall picks up after a strange white wall is found deep underground, at the mining site of the world’s largest nuclear waste depository. Project director Lars Rapp wants to keep it a secret, but rumours spread quickly in the small town that has sprung up around the site. The depository is already years behind schedule and nuclear waste is piling up, stored in temporary containers.
Completion of the facility is Lars’ life’s work so he has no intention of postponing the approaching opening ceremony. However, Lars and his team soon realise that the wall is not made of any material known to man. He has to make a decision that may well be the most important in the history of mankind. Should they leave the wall alone? Or should they try to see what’s behind it? The drama series – which was created by Aleksi Salmenperä, Mikko Pöllä and Roope Lehtinen – is produced by Fire Monkey and NICE Drama and stars Aksel Hennie, Vera Vitali, Anna Paavilainen, Staffan Göthe, Ardalan Esmaili, Claes Ljungmark, Eva Melander and Karen Bryson.
“The White Wall is set to be one of the most exciting and ambitious scripted series to come out of Scandinavia in recent years. Its unique storyline, containing universal themes about relationships and human curiosity, high production values and superb cast will definitely get the series noticed”, said Dave Clarke, DRG’s Executive Vice-President of Content, who was responsible for obtaining the rights. “It will also surprise those who assume that only traditional Scandi Noir can succeed internationally. We are looking forward to officially launching the series at NATPE and to start what we predict will be productive conversations about this brilliant title.”
While co-creator and executive producer Roope Lehtinen added: “After working with DRG on Black Widows and Easy Living and seeing these shows travel the world in both their original versions and as formats, I am delighted to have The White Wall in such safe and experienced hands. Dave and the team have been very supportive of this project from the outset, so we are now hoping for an enthusiastic response from international buyers”.
