Channel 4 has inked a bumper deal with Turner that gives them the exclusive UK rights to the fourth season of Rick & Morty. The agreement also gives the broadcaster rights to hundreds of hours of Adult Swim content.
The first three seasons of Rick & Morty will get their free-to-air premiere on E4 from next month, while the show’s fourth season will air on Channel 4 later in the year.
“Rick and Morty is one of the most anarchic, ingenious and original shows around and the breakthrough animated hit of recent years”, said Ian Katz, Channel 4’s Director of Programmes. “I’m thrilled that it’s coming to Channel 4 and E4.”
Additionally, E4 is creating a a regular Adult Swim hour’ block that will showcase episodes from different Adult Swim shows that will be available to stream, as full series boxsets, exclusively on All 4 in the UK. The first Adult Swim original to air as part of this block will be Robot Chicken: The Walking Dead Special, which has never aired the UK before.
Some of the announced titles coming to Channel 4’s portfolio of channels as a result of this deal include Robot Chicken (including the Star Wars, DC Comics and The Walking Dead specials), The Venture Bros, The Eric Andre Show, Mostly 4 Millennials, Mr. Pickles, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Tim And Eric Awesome Show, Great Job!, Tim & Eric’s Bedtime Stories, Squidbillies, Hot Streets, Ballmastrz 9009 and more.
This is not the first time that Turner has pacted with an established UK broadcaster in this way to create a dedicated UK home for Adult Swim content. They tried a similar arrangement with FOX UK back in 2015, with that deal again being headlined by exclusive rights to Rick & Morty, though admittedly the C4 agreement has a VOD element that was absent from the FOX UK deal.
“We are incredibly excited to be partnering with Channel 4 to bring Adult Swim’s eclectic mix of weirdly wonderful and surreal shows to audiences here in the UK”, said Pierre Branco, Senior Vice-President & General Manager of Northern Europe for Turner. “In this unique collaboration with Channel 4, we are creating a branded destination that will reach fans, new and old, across TV and VOD, building on the huge success of Adult Swim in the US.”
