Amazon Prime Video UK has secured the UK rights to New Amsterdam after striking a deal with international distributor NBCUniversal International Distribution. The show’s first thirteen episodes will be available to stream as of Friday February 8th, with new episodes then being made available to UK Prime subscribers every Wednesday – less than 24 hours after they air state-side
New Amsterdam follows Dr. Max Goodwin, Bellevue Hospital’s newest medical director who sets out to tear up the bureaucracy and provide exceptional care. Not taking “no” for an answer, Dr. Goodwin must disrupt the status quo and prove he will stop at nothing to breathe new life into this understaffed, underfunded and underappreciated hospital — the only one in the world capable of treating Ebola patients, prisoners from Rikers and the President of the United States under one roof — and return it to the glory that put it on the map.
The drama series, which is inspired by Dr. Eric Manheimer’s memoir “Twelve Patients: Life and Death at Bellevue Hospital” and his fifteen years as Medical Director at the hospital, is produced by Universal Television, Pico Creek Productions and Mount Moriah and stars Ryan Eggold, Freema Agyeman, Janet Montgomery, Jocko Sims, Anupam Kher and Tyler Labine. Series creator David Schulner serves as executive producer alongside Peter Horton. Kate Dennis directed and executive produced the pilot. NBC recently ordered a full season.
This marks only the fifth UK deal for a U.S. scripted series from the 2018-2019 broadcast season, E4 previously picked up The CW’s Charmed reboot and CBS’s Harry Styles produced comedy Happy Together; and Sky Witness acquired the Nathan Fillion fronted The Rookie and Dick Wolf’s FBI.
While several more deal are in progress with the big six distributors, they are taking a lot longer this year. Word has it that a couple of more series have already been picked up by Netflix under their co-licensing model – which has been used in the past for such shows as Star Trek: Discovery and Dynasty – though there is no confirmation on that just yet.
At Amazon Prime Video UK, New Amsterdam joins a large slate of first run U.S. acquisitions. The streaming service is also the UK home to AMC’s Into The Badlands and Preacher; CBS comedy Life In Pieces; Freeform’s The Bold Type; History’s period drama Vikings; Hulu’s 9/11 limited series The Looming Tower; the Fox turned Netflix DC drama Lucifer; SonyCrackle’s StartUp; Starz’s American Gods and Outlander; and USA Network’s Mr Robot and The Purge.
