BBC Two has rounded out the cast of The Luminaries. Himesh Patel (The Aeronauts), Ewen Leslie (The Cry) Erik Thomson (The Code), Benedict Hardie (Hacksaw Ridge), Yoson An (Dead Lucky) and newcomer Richard Te Are have joined the cast of the Eleanor Catton adaptation. They join previously announced cast members Eve Hewson (Robin Hood), Eva Green (Penny Dreadful) and Marton Csokas (Into The Badlands).
The Luminaries is a 19th century tale of adventure and mystery, set on the Wild West Coast of New Zealand’s South Island in the boom years of the 1860s gold rush. It follows defiant young adventurer Anna Wetherell, who has sailed from Britain to New Zealand to begin a new life. There she meets the radiant Emery Staines, an encounter that triggers a strange kind of magic that neither can explain. As they fall in love, driven together and apart by fateful coincidence, these star-crossed lovers begin to wonder: do we make our fortunes, or do our fortunes make us?
Original author Eleanor Catton adapted her novel as a six episode series. It is being produced by NBCU’s Working Title Television and Southern Light Films in association with TVNZ, Fremantle and Silver Reel. The series was originally commissioned back in 2016 by the BBC’s then Acting Controller of Drama Commissioning Lucy Richer and BBC Two Channel Editor Patrick Holland. The executive producers are Mona Qureshi for the BBC; Eleanor Catton, Andrew Woodhead, Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner for Working Title Television; Christian Vesper for Fremantle, Claudia Bluemhuber for Silver Reel; and Tim White for Southern Light Films. Filming is now underway ahead of a 2019 premiere.
