E4 is adding two U.S. scripted series to their line-up. The Channel 4 owned and operated digi-net has acquired the Charmed reboot and comedy Happy Together, which counts none other than Harry Styles amongst its executive producers, after striking a deal with international distributor CBS Studios International.
Charmed follows three sisters in a college town who, after the tragic death of their mother, are stunned to discover they are witches. Soon this powerful threesome must stand together to fight the everyday and supernatural battles that all modern witches must face: from vanquishing powerful demons to toppling the patriarchy. The drama series is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Propagate Content and stars Madeleine Mantock, Melonie Diaz, Sara Jeffrey, Rupert Evans, Ser’Darius Blain, Charlie Gillespie and Ellen Tamaki.
Loosely inspired by the time when Harry Styles lived in Ben Winston’s attic during the height of One Direction’s success, Happy Together tells the story of a 30-something, happily married couple who begin to reconnect with their younger, cooler selves when a young pop star drawn to their super-ordinary suburban life unexpectedly moves in with them. The comedy series is produced by CBS Television Studios in association with Fulwell 73 and 3 Arts and stars Damon Wayans Jr., Amber Stevens West, Felix Mallard, Stephnie Weir, Victor Williams and Chris Parnell.
Alongside Charmed and Happy Together, the deal agreed by E4 parent Channel 4 with CBS Studios International also gives them rights to several of CBS’ library series including: Cheers, Sabrina The Teenage Witch, 90210 and Rules Of Engagement. Cheers will air on Channel 4, Sabrina The Teenage Witch will air on 4Music, 90210 will come to All 4 as a box-set, while Rules Of Engagement returns to E4 (where it aired in first-run several years ago).
This wide-ranging agreement between CBSSI and Channel 4 is notable because it is the first deal for any series from the 2018-2019 broadcast season following the LA Screenings this past May. There’s no doubt that deals are taking longer this year, though several are in progress – which agreements for NBC medical drama New Amsterdam and CBS’ Dick Wolf drama FBI being the closest to fruition. At E4, Charmed and Happy Together joins a slate of exclusive first run U.S. acquisitions that also includes The Big Bang Theory, Black-ish, Marvel’s Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D., Young Sheldon, The 100, Gotham, Timeless, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Supernatural and Krypton.
