Following the runaway success of last year’s Murder On The Blackpool Express, UKTV’s Gold channel has given the greenlight to sequel film Death On The Tyne. Johnny Vegas and Sian Gibson are on-board to reprise their roles as Terry and Gemma, respectively.
Death On The Tyne sees Terry and Gemma take Mildred and her care home friends, including Hilda and Colleen on an Amsterdam cruise adventure across the Tyne. They’re welcomed aboard the Empress of the Tyne by ageing lothario Captain Jack and his motley crew. It’s not long before things start to go awry in the most puzzling mystery the Tyne has ever seen.
Sheila Reid (Benidorm) is reprising her role as Mildred. Other cast members include Sue Johnston (The Royle Family), Felicity Montagu (Bridget Jones’s Diary, I’m Alan Partridge), Doon Mackichan (Smack the Pony, Two Doors Down), Georgie Glen (Calendar Girls, Damned), Don Gilet (EastEnders), Tony Gardner (Stella, Fresh Meat), James Fleet (Vicar of Dibley), Taj Atwal (Stella, In the Club), David Mumeni (The Windsors, Fearless).
Jason Cook, who created Murder On The Blackpool Express, penned the script for the sequel. Ed Bye (Red Dwarf, Bottom) is directing the film, while Catherine Gosling Fuller is the series producer, and Mollie Freedman-Berthoud is the producer. The executive producers are Andy Brereton for Shiny Button and Pete Thornton for UKTV. The greenlight for a second film comes after Murder On The Blackpool Express broke records on Gold to become their most watched show ever, with a total audience of 1.8 million viewers.
The sequel was ordered by UKTV’s Director of Commissioning Richard Watsham and Genre General Manager for Comedy and Entertainment Steve North. Filming is now underway for a late 2018 premiere. “We’re delighted to be reuniting Sian and Johnny for another hilarious and thrilling whodunnit, alongside an equally stellar cast”, said Gerald Casey, Channel Director for Gold. “Murder On The Blackpool Express was overwhelmingly loved by the Gold viewers and these shows embody our commitment to new, exciting and original comedy alongside our familiar favourites.”
