More than a year after first announcing the project, Sky Atlantic has set the first cast members for The Young Pope follow-up The New Pope. Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald) and John Malkovich (The ABC Murders) have both signed up for starring roles in the limited series.
Sky did not reveal any details about the characters that Law and Malkovich will be playing. Given the manner in which The Young Pope ended, it is not immediately clear if Law will be reprising his role as the American Pope, Pius XIII. Production on the new series is set to get underway this November. Further casting will be announced at a later date.
Penned by Paolo Sorrentino, Umberto Contarello and Stefano Bises, The New Pope is expected to follow the events surrounding a new papacy, though the producers have yet to reveal specific plot details. The Sky/HBO co-production is set up at Wildside and Mediapro, with Lorenzo Mieli and Mario Gianani serving as the producers. FremantleMedia International will handle global sales.
