Sky Atlantic Acquires UK Rights To Epix’s ‘Get Shorty’

EXCLUSIVE: Get Shorty is crossing the pond. I’ve learned that Sky Atlantic has secured the exclusive UK rights to Epix’s dark comedy series starring Chris O’Dowd (Moone Boy) and Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond) after striking a deal with international distributor MGM Worldwide Television Distribution. Representatives of Sky did not immediately respond to TVWise’s request for comment.

Based on the Leonard Elmore novel, Get Shorty follows Miles Daly (O’Dowd), a hitman from Nevada who tries to become a movie producer in Hollywood with the help of a washed-up producer, Rick Moreweather (Romano), as a means to leave his criminal past behind. The MGM Television produced series also stars Sean Bridgers, Lidia Porto, Megan Stevenson, Lucy Walters and Carolyn Dodd. Epix has ordered a second season.

With this pick up, Get Shorty becomes the first Epix scripted original series to cross the pond. The MGM owned network – now under the reins of former TNT boss Michael Wright – has a growing slate of scripted originals that also includes spy drama Berlin Station, the Forest Whitaker fronted Godfather Of Harlem, and Batman prequel Pennyworth. The network previously aired two seasons of post-presidential comedy Graves.

At Sky Atlantic, Get Shorty joins a healthy slate of first run U.S. acquisitions, which is populated mainly by HBO and Showtime series thanks to the satcaster’s output deals with both networks. The only exception on that front is Homeland, which, as it is distributed by Fox rather than Showtime parent CBS, is not covered by said deal (Channel 4 and Netflix UK share rights to the CIA drama. Notably Sky Atlantic are also the UK home to CBS’ Blue Bloods.
