BBC Three has renewed mockumentary This Country for a third season. Additionally, they have also commissioned a one-off forty-minute special.
The renewal comes on the back of impressive ratings performance for the show, which wrapped its second season last month. On BBC Three (via iPlayer) the show has had more than 11 million requests, while repeat broadcasts on BBC One have attracted audiences of well over a million viewer – winning its slot every week.
This Country documents the lives of young cousins, Kerry and Lee ‘Kurtan’ Mucklowe as they interact with the other residents of their claustrophobic Cotswold village. The series is written by and stars siblings Daisy May Cooper and Charlie Cooper. Produced by BBC Studios, the series has been nominated for numerous awards and recently won three RTS Programme Awards for Scripted Comedy, Writer – Comedy and Comedy Performance.
Production on the special gets underway this summer, for a broadcast later this year; while season three will go into production in 2019. Both the special and the third season were commissioned by the BBC’s Controller of Comedy Commissioning Shane Allen and BBC Three Controller Damian Kavanagh. The show’s second season will remain available as a box-set on iPlayer until the end of September.
“Once in a while a show lands fully formed and audiences take it to their hearts immediately”, Shane Allen said in a statement “Daisy and Charlie’s characters and world have struck a chord with viewers of all ages as their sharp writing delivers a winning mix of heartfelt moments and punchy belly laughs, all performed to comic perfection.”
