BBC One has renewed Shakespeare & Hathaway – Private Investigators for a second season. The daytime drama series from BBC Studios will return for another ten episodes in 2019.
Shakespeare & Hathaway – Private Investigators follows Frank Hathaway, a hardboiled private investigator, and his rookie sidekick Lu Shakespeare form the unlikeliest of partnerships as they investigate the secrets of rural Warwickshire’s residents. The drama series stars Jo Joyner and Mark Benton
The renewal comes less than a month after the first season wrapped its run. Across it’s ten episodes, Shakespeare & Hathaway – Private Investigators averaged an audience of 2.11 million viewers and a 26.4% audience share; making it the biggest drama launch for Daytime since Father Brown in 2013. It also performed well on the BBC iPlayer, with over 2 million requests thus far. Production on the show’s second season is set to get underway in Stratford-upon-Avon in September. BBC Worldwide handles global sales.
“This new series has amused and delighted so many viewers with its inspired story-telling, intriguing characters and knowing comedy – all set in Shakespeare country”, said the BBC’s Controller of Programming and Daytime Dan McGolpin, who commissioned the second season. “I’m very pleased to confirm that it will return to both BBC One Daytime and iPlayer early next year.”
“Series two will see Frank and Lu investigating kidnapped canines, locked room mysteries, dead ringers and doppelgängers, vice, fraud, extortion and identity theft”, added Will Trotter, Head of Daytime Drama for BBC Studios. “Our detectives will continue where they left off putting the world to rights as they snoop and pry. More ado in Stratford-Upon-Avon.”
