Weeds star Justin Kirk has been tapped for a recurring role in Showtime’s half-hour comedy series Kidding, starring Jim Carrey, Catherine Keener, Frank Langella and Judy Greer. Kirk will play Peter, the new boyfriend of Jill (Greer) who is Jeff’s (Carrey) estranged wife.
Kidding follows Jeff, aka Mr. Pickles, an icon of children’s television, a beacon of kindness and wisdom to America’s impressionable young minds and the parents who grew up with him – who also anchors a multimillion-dollar branding empire. But when this beloved personality’s family – wife, two sons, sister and father – begins to implode, Jeff finds no fairy tale or fable or puppet will guide him through this crisis, which advances faster than his means to cope. The result: A kind man in a cruel world faces a slow leak of sanity as hilarious as it is heartbreaking.
Showtime has commissioned ten episodes for Kidding‘s first season. The series is executive produced by Carrey, Oscar winner Michel Gondry, Jason Bateman, Jim Garavente, Raffi Adlan and Michael Aguilar. The series was created by Dave Holstein (Raising Hope), who wrote the pilot and will serve as showrunner. Gondry will also direct the project. Owing to their existing output agreement with Showtime, Sky Atlantic holds exclusive UK rights to Kidding. A premiere date has not yet been set.
