BBC Two has released a first look image from their upcoming King Lear adaptation, which is set to premiere this Spring.
King Lear is set in the present day and follows the eponymous ruler, presiding over a totalitarian military dictatorship in England. Sir Anthony Hopkins stars in the title role. Rounding out the cast is Emma Thompson, Emily Watson Florence Pugh, Jim Broadbent, Andrew Scott, John Macmillan, Jim Carter, Christopher Eccleston, Tobias Menzies, Anthony Calf and Karl Johnson.
This adaptation of the Shakespeare play hails from Richard Eyre, who penned the script and directed, and is set up as a co-production with Amazon Studios, who retain U.S., German and second window UK rights. Playground and Sonia Friedman Productions are producing in association with Lemaise Pictures Limited. The executive producers are Colin Callender and Scott Huff for Playground, Sonia Friedman for Sonia Friedman Productions, and Lucy Richer for the BBC.
The first look (see below) shows Sir Anthony Hopkins and Florence Pugh in character as King Lear and his Cordelia, his youngest daughter.
