Amazon Prime Video UK has struck a deal with NBCUniversal International Distribution to secure the exclusive UK rights to Freeform’s drama series The Bold Type. The series will premiere on this side of the pond on Friday February 9th.
The Bold Type follows the outrageous lives and loves of those responsible for the global women’s magazine, Scarlet. The rising generation of Scarlet women lean on one another as they find their own voices in a sea of intimidating leaders. Together they explore sexuality, identity, love and fashion.
The drama series, which is inspired by the life of Hearst Magazines Chief Content Office Joanna Coles, is produced by Universal Television and The District and stars Katie Stevens (Faking It), Aisha Dee (Chasing Life), Meghann Fahy (Political Animals), Sam Page (House of Cards), Matt Ward (Remedy) and Melora Hardin (Transparent). The executive producers are Sarah Watson, David Bernad, Joanna Coles and Ruben Fleischer. Holly Whidden is a co-executive producer. Freeform has already renewed The Bold Type for a second season.
Amazon’s deal with NBCUniversal International Distribution also covers the show’s second season and covers additional territories including Germany, France and Spain. “This is the latest in a line-up of shows on Prime Video with strong female protagonists at their core including, most recently, The Marvelous Mrs Maisel which won two Golden Globe® awards earlier this month”, said Jay Marine, Vice-President for Amazon Prime Video EU. “We look forward to hearing what Prime members in Europe think of the first season ahead of the second season launching later this year, also exclusively on Prime Video.”
The Bold Type is the latest in a long-line of exclusive U.S. scripted acquisitions for Amazon Prime Video UK. who have become an aggressive buyer in recent years – competing directly with the likes of Netflix UK and more traditional UK broadcasters. The streaming service is also the exclusive UK home to such shows as AMC’s Into The Badlands and Preacher; CBS’ Life In Pieces; Crackle’s StartUp; Fox’s Lucifer; History’s Vikings; Hulu’s Casual and The Path; Lifetime’s UnREAL; NBC’s Taken; Starz’s American Gods and Outlander; SundanceTV’s Hap & Leonard; TNT’s Animal Kingdom; and USA Network’s Falling Water and Mr. Robot.
