EXCLUSIVE: Superstore is finally crossing the pond. Multiple sources are telling me that ITV has agreed a deal with international distributor NBCUniversal International Distribution for the exclusive UK rights to the America Ferrera fronted comedy series, with plans to air it on ITV2 in 2018.
Superstore follows a group of employees at a big-box store and explores the examination of love, friendship and the beauty of everyday moments. The comedy is produced by NBC’s sister studio Universal Television and stars America Ferrera, Ben Feldman, Mark McKinney, Lauren Ash, Colton Dunn, Nichole Bloom and Nico Santos.
This acquisition, which sources tell me was brokered by ITV’s Head of Acquired Series Sasha Breslau, comes mere months after TVWise broke the news that ITV2 dropped U.S. sitcom Mom following disappointing ratings. (At the same time the channel dropped Scorpion, but have yet to make any moves on a new scripted drama acquisition). Superstore joins fellow imports Family Guy and Ghosted on ITV2’s schedule.
Superstore is the latest sale for NBCUniversal International Distribution. The international distribution arm of NBCU recently licensed the Will & Grace revival to Channel 5, Law & Order True Crime to Sky Living, and Ted Danson comedy The Good Place to Netflix UK. The studio and ITV previously pacted together for repeat rights to USA Network shows Psych and Royal Pains.
