ITV Renews 'Victoria' For Third Season – TVWise

While the fate of the series was never in any real doubt, ITV has today announced that they have officially picked up royal drama Victoria for a third season. No word yet on whether or not there will be another Christmas special for 2018 (this year’s special lands on Christmas Day at 9pm).
Victoria follows the life of Queen Victoria. The cast for season two included Jenna Coleman, Tom Hughes, Dame Diana Rigg, Alex Jennings, Peter Firth, David Oakes, Margaret Clunie, Catherine Flemming, Jordan Waller, Bebe Cave, Nell Hudson, Ferdinand Kingsley and Adrian Schiller.
“We’re delighted that the nation has taken Victoria to its hearts”, said ITV’s Head of Drama Polly Hill, who commissioned the third season. “Filled with romance, political crises and family drama, Daisy Goodwin’s scripts bring this fascinating part of history to life so vividly and we look forward to regaling audiences with the next part of the illustrious Queen’s reign.”
The show’s third season will explore the next chapter in the monarch’s eventful life. At present the only confirmed cast members are Jenna Coleman and Tom Hughes, who are reprising their roles as Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. “Series three will start in 1848 which was a hugely dramatic and eventful time for both the royal family and Europe, with revolutions on the continent and uncertainty around the monarchy, said series creator, writer and executive producer Daisy Goodwin. “Viewers can expect more drama than ever before in the third series.”
The official renewal comes after season two attracted a consolidated average of 6.4 million viewers and a 25% share; making it ITV’s best returning Sunday 9pm drama of the year. Victoria is produced by the ITV owned indie Mammoth Screen. PBS Masterpiece co-produces for the U.S. market. The executive producers are Daisy Goodwin, Mammoth Screen’s Damien Timmer and Masterpiece’s Rebecca Eaton. ITV Studios Global Entertainment handles international sales.
“Jenna Coleman and Tom Hughes shine as Victoria and Albert and it’s an honour to have them back for a third series, which covers a tumultuous period in our country’s history, filled to the brim with royal scandals, political skirmishes and constitutional crises, as new historical figures enter the saga to challenge Victoria and Albert as never before”, added Damien Timmer, Managing Director of Mammoth Screen.
