We have our first post-LA Screenings deal. Sky Living has secured the UK broadcast rights to ABC’s medical drama The Good Doctor, starring Bates Motel‘s Freddie Highmore, a representative of the satcaster confirmed to TVWise. The series is distributed internationally by Sony Pictures Television.
The Good Doctor follows Shaun Murphy (Highmore), a young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome, relocates from a quiet country life to join a prestigious hospital’s surgical unit. Alone in the world and unable to personally connect with those around him, Shaun uses his extraordinary medical gifts to save lives and challenge the skepticism of his colleagues.
The drama series, which hails from House creator David Shore and Hawaii Five-0‘s Daniel Dae Kim, is produced by Sony Pictures Television and ABC Studios and in addition to Freddie Highmore, also stars Antonia Thomas, Nicholas Gonzalez, Chuku Modu, Beau Garrett, Hill Harper, Richard Schiff and Tamlyn Tomita. The executive producers are David Shore, Daniel Dae Kim, David Kim and Sebastian Lee.
The Good Doctor is the first series screened to buyers at the LA Screenings back in May to secure a UK deal. (The CW’s Dynasty reboot was not screened to buyers at the annual event as Netflix were already in advanced talks with CBS Studios International to board as the global broadcaster). A slew of further UK deals are expected soon, especially for red hot titles such as Roseanne, Young Sheldon, Law & Order: True Crime and Seal Team.
At Sky Living, the show joins a healthy roster of exclusive acquisitions, especially after they moved away from originals a couple of years ago. The channel is also the exclusive UK home to the likes of Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder, Grey’s Anatomy, Criminal Minds, Elementary, Madam Secretary, Blindspot, Chicago Fire and Shades Of Blue. “The Good Doctor is going to be a brilliant addition to Sky Living’s line up of the best-loved US drama”, said Sky Living Director Adam MacDonald. “I personally can’t wait for the twists and turns as Dr Shaun Murphy makes his incredible mark on the medical world.”
