FOX UK is adding a second prime-time drama series set in the X-Men universe to their slate. Set in the wider X-Men universe, The Gifted tells the story of a suburban couple whose ordinary lives are rocked by the sudden discovery that their teenage children possess mutant powers. Forced to go on the run from a hostile government, the family seeks help from an underground network of mutants and must fight to survive.
The drama series is produced by 20th Century Fox Television in association with Marvel Television and stars Stephen Moyer (Shots Fired, True Blood), Amy Acker (Person of Interest), Natalie Alyn Lind (Gotham), Percy Hynes White (Night at the Museum 3), Sean Teale (Reign), Jamie Chung (Gotham), Emma Dumont (Aquarius), Blair Redford (Satisfaction) and Coby Bell (Burn Notice). Burn Notice creator Matt Nix penned the script for the series and serves as showunner.
The Gifted is the second Marvel series set in the X-Men universe to land on FOX UK. The channel is also the exclusive UK home to Legion, which is set to return for a second season in 2018. “Exploring an all-new corner of the X-Men Universe, The Gifted introduces an exciting new generation of mutants, as they struggle to come to terms with their powers”, said Toby Etheridge, Head of Programming for Fox Networks Group UK. “On the run from a hostile government that tracks down mutants, The Gifted portrays one family’s battle for survival and what it means to be different. The Gifted is a hugely entertaining drama express from the U.S., that viewers will love.”
This is the latest in a long-line of acquisitions in the past twelve months that under-pin FOX UK’s growing prominence in U.S. scripted acquisitions. The Gifted, while not the hottest show out of the LA Screenings, was nevertheless on the wish lists of several UK broadcaster. This is not the first time that FOX UK has landed a series sought after by their competitors; the channel previously swooped for UK rights to such shows as 24: Legacy, Prison Break and the linear rights to Lucifer – all of which were targets for more prominent channels such as Sky and Channel 5.
At Fox UK, The Gifted joins an ever expanding line-up of acquisitions that – in addition to the aforementioned Legion and Lucifer – also includes The Walking Dead, NCIS, Bull, Atlanta, Baskets, Outcast and American Dad. They are also expected to pick up at least one other series from the upcoming 2017-2018 broadcast season following the recent LA Screenings.
