Alan Partridge is returning to the BBC! The Beeb is set to bring back the iconic character played by Steve Coogan for a special on BBC Two commemorating the 25th anniversary of Partidge’s first appearance on BBC Radio in 1992, and a new series on BBC One.
Little information is available at present other than the fact that Coogan will return as Partridge and his production company Baby Cow Productions will produce both the anniversary special and the new BBC One series. It is not immediately clear if co-creator Armando Ianucci will be involved in these new shows.
Both the special and the series were commissioned by Shane Allen, the BBC’s Controller of Comedy. “Alan Partridge is in the top tier of comedy characters of all time, it fills my comedy heart with joy to welcome him back to BBC One and BBC Two, Shane Allen said in a statement.
This returns Alan Partridge to the BBC fold. After the character first appeared on BBC Radio in the early 1990s, Partidge appeared in a TV adaptation of Knowing Me Knowing You With Alan Partridge for BBC Two, before eventually landing a BBC Two sitcom, I’m Alan Partridge. After that Coogan played Partridge for two seasons of Mid Morning Matters and a number of specials, which went to Sky rather than the BBC. Ianucci said back in 2012 that they went to Sky as the BBC didn’t want to give the show a prime-time slot – something that has clearly changed in the past five years.
