BBC One has set the cast for Age Before Beauty. Polly Walker (Mr Selfridge). Robson Green (Granchester), Sue Johnston (Downton Abbey) and James Murray (Him) have all signed on for starring roles in the six episode Manchester salon drama from Poldark scribe Debbie Horsfield.
Age Before Beauty is set in a failing family run beauty salon in Manchester’s Northern Quarter and will follow Bel, who after spending the past 18 years as a home-maker, steps in to save the family business. She will have to contend with the salon’s high-maintenance staff – her family. Family feuds and bitter rivalries, professional and personal, escalate in the salon amongst the Botox, fillers and face-lifts.
Polly Walker has been cast as lead character Bel; Robson Green as Teddy, Bel’s brother-in-law and long-time best friend, who begs her to step in and rescue the family business; Sue Johnston as Bel’s mother, Ivy-Rae; and James Murray as Wesley, Bel’s husband. Rounding out the main cast is Lisa Riley (Three Girls), Kelly Harrison (The Level), Vicky Myers (The Five) and Madeleine Mantock (Into the Badlands).
Created and scripted by Horsfield, Age Before Beauty is set up at Mainstreet Pictures – the indie set up by former ITV Drama commissioners Laura Mackie and Sally Haynes. Guy De Glanville is the series producer, while Paul Norton Walker is attached to direct. The executive producers are Debbie Horsfield, Mainstreet’s joint MD’s Laura Mackie and Sally Haynes, and the BBC’s Elizabeth Kilgarriff. Filming on the series gets underway next week.
