Here’s a scripted acquisition that slipped under the radar.
Fox’s hybrid comedy series Son Of Zorn, which features an animated character in a live-action setting, has been picked up on this side of the pond by Viceland UK. Son Of Zorn launched on the channel on June 12th and will continue to air in the Monday night 10pm time-slot.
The hybrid comedy got a mixed reception from UK buyers at the 2016 LA Screenings, with none of the bigger broadcasters biting. It also did not perform particularly well in its Sunday night time-slot on Fox state-side, prompting the network to officially pull the plug last month.
Son Of Zorn follows Zorn, a fully animated legendary warrior who, finds that reconnecting with his live-action son, Alan, and ex-wife, Edie, while suffering through a mundane office job and the banality of suburban life, is harder than waging actual war in his distant, mystical homeland of Zephyria. The comedy series is produced by 20th Century Fox Television and stars Jason Sudekis, Cheryl Hines, Artemis Pebdani, Johnny Pemberton and Tim Meadows. Son Of Zorn is distributed internationally by Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution.
Since their launch in late 2016, Viceland UK has been slowly increasing their foot-print in U.S. scripted acquisitions, with a focus on comedy. It’s worth noting that Son Of Zorn is their first foray into a first-window acquisition, having previously only secured linear rights to shows that air on Netflix UK, such as Archer. This marks the second agreement that the channel has struck with Twentieth Century Fox Television Distribution in recent months, after they previously swooped for linear rights to It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia, which, like Archer, also initially airs on this side of the pond on Netflix.
