Netflix UK has acquired Ghost Wars, a new sci-fi drama from Continuum creator Simon Barry which just scored a 13 episode straight-to-series order at Syfy, TVWise has learned. Netflix has also taken rights to the series in all other territories excluding the United States.
Ghost Wars is set in a remote Alaskan town that has been overrun by paranormal forces. Local outcast Roman Mercer must overcome the town’s prejudices and his own personal demons if he’s to harness his repressed psychic powers and save everyone from the mass haunting that’s threatening to destroy them all. Simon Barry created the series and will serve as showrunner.
Production on the series began earlier this week with an all star cast that includes Vincent D’Onofrio (Law & Order: Criminal Intent, Marvel’s Daredevil), Kim Coates (Sons of Anarchy), Avan Jogia (Victorious, Twisted), Kristin Lehman (Motive) and Meatloaf (Fight Club). Nomadic Pictures is producing, with Chad Oakes, Mike Frislev, Simon Barry, Dennis Heaton and David Von Ancken serving as executive producers.
“Ghost Wars is not just a contemporary homage to classic psychological horror, it’s also an opportunity to tell stories about human politics and how we shape our beliefs and lives based on our individual perspectives and biases”. said Barry. “Science, Humanism, Religion and the Paranormal all get a seat at the table. I’m grateful that Chad Oakes and Mike Frislev have assembled such a wealth of talent, both in front of and behind the camera, to hopefully elevate this genre series beyond expectations.”
This marks the second sci-fi drama series produced by Nomadic Pictures to score a global distribution deal on Netflix. The streaming service also serves as the exclusive global broadcaster (outside of the U.S.) for Syfy’s Van Helsing, which is currently in production on its second season. Both Ghost Wars and the second season of Van Helsing will premiere later this year.
