5USA Takes FTA Rights To ‘Bull’ In Deal With CBS Studios International

Bull is heading to free-to-air. Channel 5 has secured the FTA rights to the CBS series, which was recently renewed for a second season, for their digi-net 5USA after striking a deal with international distributor CBS Studios International, TVWise has learned.

Inspired by the early career of Dr Phil, Bull follows Dr. Bull, the ultimate puppet master as he combines psychology, human intuition and high tech data to learn what makes jurors, attorneys, witnesses and the accused tick. The drama series is produced by CBS Television Studios and stars Michael Weatherly, Freddy Rodriguez, Geneva Carr, Chris Jackson, Jaime Lee Kirchner and Annabelle Attanasio.

This was perhaps a natural acquisition for Channel 5, who hold rights (both first window and/or free-to-air) to a number of CBS’ prime-time drama series including NCISNCIS: Los AngelesNCIS: New Orleans. “Michael Weatherly has an army of fans for his work on NCIS, and I’m thrilled that Channel 5 is able to bring his brand new series to the U.K.”, said Katie Keenan, Head of Acquisitions for Channel 5 and VIMN UK. “Our 5USA audience loves gripping U.S. drama, and I can’t wait for them to meet Dr. Jason Bull.”

This is not the first UK deal that CBS Studios International has struck for Bull. The studio previously licensed first window rights to the show to Fox Networks Group’s flagship channel FOX UK who are still airing the show’s first season. This FTA agreement has no impact on that existing agreement and FOX UK continues to hold first window rights to Bull. The show’s first season is set to premiere on 5USA this summer.

“We are thrilled to bring Bull, the #1 new series on U.S. television, to U.K. free-to-air audiences”, added Stephen Tague, Senior Vice President, Europe for CBS Studios International. “Bull landing on 5USA further strengthens our relationship with Channel 5 and complements the network’s impressive slate of existing CBS programming.”
