Idiotsitter is getting a run on free-to-air.
Channel 5’s youth-skewing digi-net 5Star has picked up the Comedy Central original comedy series, with plans to air the ten episode first season next month as part of a comedy block that will also include the second season of FX’s You’re The Worst, TVWise has learned.
This is not the first time that Idiotsitter, which is distributed globally by Channel 5’s parent company Viacom International Media Networks, has aired in the UK. Sister channel Comedy Central UK took first window rights to Idiotsitter and aired the show’s first season last Summer. The show’s second season is expected to roll out on Comedy Central UK later this year.
Idiotsitter‘s repeat run on 5Star comes out of a strategy, first announced in 2015, to share acquisitions across VIMN’s UK portfolio of channels (Channel 5, 5Star, 5USA, Spike UK, Comedy Central UK, MTV UK and BET International). In a previous interview with TVWise, acquisitions executive Marie Claire-Dunlop explained the strategy. “Whether [an acquisition] gets a premiere run on Comedy Central or Channel 5 first is really dependent on the channels needs at the time”, she said. “There’s one centralised acquisitions team so we’re always having this on-going dialogue about acquisitions and whether any sharing can be done between the free and pay channels”.
Originally set up as a short-form web series before it moved to TV, Idiotsitter follows Charlotte Newhouse, a cash-strapped, straight and narrow Ivy League grad, who reluctantly answers a babysitting ad to make ends meet, only to find out what is actually needed is a court-appointed guardian for Jillian, an heiress under house arrest in her daddy’s mansion. The comedy series is produced in-house and stars Jillian Bell and Charlotte Newhouse. The executive producers are Bell, Newhouse, Jeff Tomsic, Pam Kohl, Amy Slomovits, Dave Becky and Brady McKay.
