ABC’s short-lived period drama Wicked City is coming to the UK.
The eight episode series will launch exclusively on ABC Studios On Demand – the VOD service providing complete box sets of ABC Studios produced shows, which is available through Sky Box Sets, Now TV and Virgin Media – on Monday May 1st, TVWise has learned.
Wicked City is the third series from ABC Studios that was produced for the 2015-2016 broadcast season to launch exclusively in the UK on ABC Studios On Demand in the past few months. As TVWise previously reported, both sci-fi drama The Whispers and soapy drama Blood & Oil also recently launched on the VOD service.
Described as a character driven “true crime” procedural that explores sex, politics and popular culture across various noteworthy eras in Los Angeles history, Wicked City is set in the 1980s and follows two LAPD detectives as they search for a Bonnie & Clyde-esque serial-killing team. The drama series is produced by ABC Studios and stars Ed Westwick, Taissa Farmiga, Jeremy Sisto, Gabriel Luna, Karolina Wydra, Evan Ross, Anne Winters, Jaime Ray Newman and Erika Christensen.
Wicked City, which was cancelled in November 2015, was launched to UK buyers at the 2015 LA Screenings by international distributor Disney Media Distribution. The show was relatively well received, with sources telling TVWise at the time that both UKTV and Channel 4 were circling. But as is so often the case, after it was cancelled by ABC, UK buyers opted not to proceed with acquiring the show.
