Shudder, the premium streaming service from AMC Networks International, has acquired the UK rights to HBO Asia’s English language fantasy thriller Halfworlds, TVWise has learned. The show’s first season will premiere on Thursday April 6th, while season two will follow in 2017.
From rising filmmaker Joko Anwar, Halfworlds is set in present-day Jakarta and lifts the veil on a parallel world of bloodthirsty creatures from Indonesian mythology who have lived amongst humans for centuries. They are known simply as Demit and have been carefully concealed by a powerful family of mortals.
The arrival of the Gift, a mysterious supernatural event, causes the hidden world to reveal itself. As the day of the Gift draws near, Sarah, a street artist, finds herself caught between the worlds of human and Demit. Once the Demit find out who she really is, and what she must do, the delicate balance between the two worlds will be shaken forever. The series features the art of of Chris Lie and was shot on location in Batam and Jakarta, Indonesia.
Halfworlds marks the second English language HBO Asia original scripted series to travel to the UK. Previously, the company’s high profile drama Serangoon Road, which was a co-production with Australian public broadcaster ABC, was snapped up by Sony Entertainment Television (no known simply as Sony Channel) for UK broadcast back in 2014.
