Greenleaf is coming to the UK.
Netflix UK has secured the exclusive rights to the megachurch drama series out of a wider global deal between the streaming service and international distributor Lionsgate Television, TVWise has confirmed.
Greenleaf is set in the world of the Greenleaf family and their sprawling Memphis megachurch, where scandalous secrets and lies are as numerous as the faithful. The drama series stars Merle Dandridge, Keith David, Lynn Whitfield, Kim Hawthorne, Lamman Rucker, Tye White, Deborah Joy Winans, Desiree Ross and Oprah Winfrey.
This marks the very first original series produced state-side for the Discovery backed OWN (Oprah Winfrey Network) to be picked up by a UK broadcaster. While OWN started off in the unscripted game, the network has made a big push into scripted with shows such as Greenleaf, Tyler Perry’s For Better Or Worse, The Haves & The Have Nots and most recently Queen Sugar. The news of this global deal between Netflix and Lionsgate Television was first reported by Variety.
At Netflix UK, Greenleaf joins a slate of exclusive U.S. acquisitions that includes ABC’s presidential drama Designated Survivor; The CW’s iZombie, Reign, Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, Frequency and Riverdale; AMC’s Better Call Saul; ABC’s Once Upon A Time; Audience’s You Me Her; Freeform’s Pretty Little Liars, Beyond and Shadowhunters: The Mortal Instruments; MTV’s Scream; FX Networks’ It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia and Archer; as well as CBS’ upcoming Star Trek: Discovery.
